The author who is Certified Translator in Malaysia attempts to explain the different types of certified translation for use by Expats in Malaysia.
As a rule of thumb, prior to engaging a translator or translation company, an Expat needs to ascertain the type of transition that is required by the requesting parties whether if general certified translation would suffice or if they require a Malaysian government attested certified translation.
a) General Certified Translation for General Use
This is classified as documents to be used by non-government entities such as private and international schools and colleges or universities. For such case these entities may not require a government certified translation as it is used internally. In this case, Expats may use certified translation that is produced by embassies, high commissions or translators who are proficient in the source and target languages and signed with their credentials.
b) Certified Translation for Official Use
This is classified as documents to be used by:
i. Government based institutions such as banks. For example, this is required when an Expat would like to apply for mortgage loan in Malaysia either directly or via the Malaysia My Second Home Program (MM2H).
ii. Government agencies such as the National Registration Department (NRD). For example, this is required when an Expat would like to apply for birth certificate for their newly born baby while in Malaysia.
iii. Embassies and High Commissions for outbound purposes. This is required when an Expat would like to use any documents from Malaysia in their home country for example for marriage, for registration of their baby who was born in Malaysia.
c) Certified Translation by TRANSLATIONS MALAYSIA

i. All Certified Translation for General Use will be translated and attested by a certified translator’s stamp.
ii. All Certified Translation for Official Use will be translated and attested by a certified translator’s stamp and endorsed by the Malaysian Translators Association.
